Get your Franklin TN home ready for Winter with these tips

The Relocation Engineer, Mike Grumbles, ENGINEERING Your Next Move in this video blog episode is here to provide a few tips to help prepare your Franklin TN home for the upcoming winter.  Now that Fall weather is here it is time to start thinking about these simple things that you can do to prepare your home for colder weather.

Introduction Video for this episode.

Watch the full length video below and read the blog to gain some insight in extra tips that I shared to prepare your Franklin home for the harsh cold weather coming soon.

If your home is on a crawl space and you do not have an encapsulated or sealed crawl space you likely have vents placed all around the base of your home into the crawl space.  Those vents are opened for the summer months to allow air to circulate across the crawl space in hopes to remove humid air in the crawl space.  Now that the air is colder and less humid you want to close those vents to help increase the heating efficiency in your home and to avoid cold air causing pipes to freeze and even burst in the crawl space.

Your home will likely have trees that have shed their leaves for the fall.  You don't want those leaves to be left piled up against the foundation of your home.  For one they hold in a lot of moisture and you never want to have that up against your house.  Another reason to remove those leaves by raking or leaf blowing them and hauling them away is that they could have fungus from this past summer and you want to remove all of that before spring arrives so you can give your plants and shrubs their best chance for a healthy summer next year.

While we are focusing on leaves, you will want to have them removed from your roof and gutters.  You want to have a condition where water can quickly and freely flow from your shingles to your gutters and away form the house.  If we get really cold conditions like we had last year, slowing down that water from leaving your roof system could become a big problem.  If your gutters hold water and it becomes ice then you will likely get ice damming when the ice starts to melt and has no where to go except under your shingles.  Contact a local handyman or gutter cleaning service to inspect and clean your gutter sand if needed install a gutter guard type of system.

Since you won't be needing the water hose on the exterior in the colder temperatures you should disconnect your garden hoses.  This also helps the anti-freeze features of the external hose bibs to function properly.  It is also a good idea to get some insulated bib covers to help protect against freezing hose bibs.  Buy yours early as once the really cold weather sets in you won't be able to find these in local stores.

This short list should not take you or a handyman long to complete but I hope that it gets you thinking about maintaining the value of your Franklin home.  Please leave a comment if you have other ideas that you feel would benefit the community.
